I love mushrooms... but not this kind!!
Thursday, October 29, 2026I have been thinking about this for months. I know the human body is a world of microorganisms - we have bacteria, viruses, and fungi inside and out of us. We've also all seen the "Did You Know" infographic of little elephant like mite on our eyelashes (I cannot find proof of this so maybe I am confused).
But, it just feels like I have all those little guys working overtime and holidays. I am a high yield microorganism factory.
Should I start from top to bottom?
1. Dandruff: I have to use Nizoral every other hair wash day to keep the flakes away. My holy grail anti dandruff shampoo was the Neutrogena T/Gel, but unfortunately it was discontinued :-( the Coal Tar extract was a miracle ingredient. I tried the T/Sal shampoo, but I found salicylic acid doesn't do much for me. I found another, the DHS Tar Shampoo, I ordered it once last year and I believe it worked but it didn't feel like too much of a game changer. I then tried out Nizoral and I think it worked well enough that I stuck with it. Each time I purchase it it feels so pricey, but it works and a little goes a long way.
Gross TRIGGER WARNING, but a few days ago I washed my hair and put curl cream and mousse, and then used dry shampoo a couple days later, then went to a rainy concert the next day, then the next morning I had flakes on my hairline. . . y'all when I picked at them it was ooey gooey underneath - holy shit! I hit another level of fungus - may I say psoriasis alert? :-).
2. Tinea Versicolor - Regarding my face, I actually haven't gotten much (Alhamdullah), BUT there is a thing I used to get quite often in the summer as a child and only occasionally now - tinea versicolor. If I do get it, it usually shows up on my arms. So tinea versicolor is a skin infection caused by overgrowth of Malassezia yeast - I always thought it was sun related or triggered by the sun but actually, it already exists on 90% of humans, but when it is in overproduction and you tan - the infected skin doesn't tan equally and so blotches become even more visible. The trick to getting rid of it is to wash with anti-dandruff shampoo. When I was younger I used to get it on my face - now I don't and it's probably because I am an avid sunscreen user... the scary thought though - is that it's all still there .. just not visible.
